The Introduction to Media and Communications workshop will introduce you to the basics of working with the media that every nonprofit should know…especially if you’re involved in social causes.

Some of the topics you can expect:

• When (and when not) to use the media

• What is “news”?

• The different types of media in your neighborhood: names, phone numbers, addresses (don’t forget the weeklies!)

• Writing and following up on a press release

• The truth about press conferences (have a party instead!)

• “Graduating” to editorial meetings, letters to the editor, and OpEds

• They’ve run your story; now what?

It’ll also discuss the folks you might meet along the way:

• the reporter

• the editor

• the publisher

• the assignment desk

• the radio “personality”

• the talk show host

There’s still more!

This workshop also hopes to cover more effective ways to communicate with your key constituencies: meetings, email broadcasts, word of mouth, great websites, etc. Rick will discuss his “communications equation”: audiences, messages, and mechanisms.

When: Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 9:00am – 12:30pm
Where:
Channel One Central Falls, 361 Cowden Street, Central Falls, RI 02863 (located in the Ralph J. Holden Community Center) (Map)
Trainer: Rick Schwartz

Rick Schwartz’ 35-year career weaves communications with his commitment to nonprofits.

He spent half the years with The Rhode Island Foundation, one of the nation’s largest community foundations; and the Mass. Council on the Arts and Humanities, a premier state arts agency.

In both cases, he was in charge of all communications, was deeply involved with policy setting, and worked directly with grantees.

He spent the other years as a journalist, in government (staff director, Mass. Senate Committee on Human Services and Elderly Affairs), and consulting with nonprofits on communications and strategic planning, which he still does, under Rick Schwartz/StraightTalk.
