Lobbying for Nonprofit Organizations

Non-profit organizations with and without 501(c)(3) status are allowed to lobby and influence legislation. Yes, there are limits and rules and regulations to follow. But, others have done it, and you can, too!

Judy Jones has spent more than 20 years shaping public policy in Rhode Island. For more than 17 years she served as the Government Affairs Liaison for Rhode Island Housing where she successfully influenced legislation concerning all aspects of affordable housing development and funding. She has served as a policy aide in the offices of the General Treasurer and Lieutenant Governor, managed government relations for United Way of Rhode Island, and was a community resource specialist of the Young Parents Program. Judy is currently a consultant on public policy, where she brings her extensive knowledge of state and local government to nonprofit organizations across the state.

Karen Malcolm has more than 20 years of non-profit and community organizing experience in Rhode Island, including five years at Ocean State Action Fund. She has served as Director of Agency Services at the RI Community Food Bank, as Director of Women’s Labor Education, and as Project Director of the Labor in the Schools program at the Institute for Labor Studies. Karen served as an appointee to the state Department of Human Services Food Stamp Advisory Committee, the Rhode Island Human Resource Investment Council’s School-to-Career sub-committee and serves on the Board of the Women’s Health & Education Fund. She graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Rhode Island.

Bob Walsh graduated with degrees in Political Science and Organizational Behavior and Management from Brown University and received his Master of Science in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Rhode Island. After a decade in banking and finance, he joined the National Education Association Rhode Island staff in 1992, and was named Executive Director of NEARI in May of 2001.In addition to his work at NEARI, Bob currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of Working Rhode Island, Secretary/Treasurer of Ocean State Action, and serves on the boards of several organizations, including WaterFire Providence, The Providence Plan, Leadership Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Labor History Society.
